Chapter Fifteen

Tides rise and fall. The sun rises and sets.

Psyche sees Eros.

Eros waits on the fire escape for Psyche to discover she is there. Psyche mistakes her for the sun well into the afternoon.

“You like staring at me, don’t you?”

Psyche rolls her eyes. She crawls out of the window to sit next to Eros. Before them, the city is already awake, already bustling, though not entirely of its own free will. Below them one of her neighbors is shouting at her boyfriend over the phone. A woman walks a Great Dane. Two men dap each other up and exchange bags of what are definitely, absolutely, one hundred percent normal gummy worms.

Psyche tips her morning tea to her lips. She hands Eros her cup, too. “You know I do.”

There’s something of a cat’s preen in the way Eros rests her head on her hand. “I wanted to hear you say it.” She holds the cup below her chin and waves it. Psyche tries to see the vapor, but she knows it’s a lost cause. “My Domain is one that thrives on adoration.”

Eros leans back. Latte leaps into her lap, content to bask in the warmth of Eros’s presence. Those two have been getting along almost too well for Psyche’s liking.

“I’ve got a question of my own,” Psyche says. A moment’s hesitation. Are you worried I’ll change my mind? That had been what she wanted to ask. But that might put too much tension in this red-fruit moment, this peace. There’s still so much she wants to know about this woman. “If you could have picked any Domain, what would it have been?”

The neighbor downstairs is truly screaming, her voice harsh. The dogs have stopped to stare at her.

Eros reaches for Latte’s stomach. Her scritches never seem to get her maimed. “I think,” she says, “that I’d like to have Zephyr’s. He can have mine if he likes. He’s always been too charming for what he is.”

Psyche raises a brow. “And that is?”

Latte begins to purr. “Zephyr belongs to the Winds. All the Courts are open to him so long as he doesn’t offend. And, as the West Wind, he’s the nicest of all his siblings, so people like to keep him entertained.”

“Except for Glaucus,” Psyche says.

“Glaucus has it out for everyone,” says Eros. “But yes, especially Zephyr.”

Psyche draws her knees up to her chest. “What’d Zephyr do?” she asks. She can’t imagine a man that nice doing something that upsetting.

Eros hums. “The short version? Glaucus thought Zephyr had been a little too friendly with a woman he saw as his own.”

Psyche leans on her shoulder. “I don’t have to stream until later, so I’m all ears. Will you tell me why you want to be the Wind so badly? Seems like he’s gotten into his own share of troubles.”

Eros wraps an arm around her waist. Latte lies between them, now, sprawled from one lap to the other. “The Winds,” Eros says, “go where they like and heed no one. This is
